Role Description

The International Business Times is looking for a Technology and Science Editor to manage a desk of specialist reporters in a fast-paced newsroom in the UK as well as providing leadership to writers at its Bangalore bureau.

The successful candidate will be responsible for covering, breaking and editing technology and science news for a global audience.

This role is a full time position based in Canary Wharf, London.

Role Responsibilities
  • Strong, innovative leadership that inspires technology and science reporters to produce top quality, popular digital content
  • Conducting weekly editorial meetings to plan, strategise and create content ahead of/around major news, product launches, seasonal events
  • A strong presence in the newsroom who can write and commission authoritatively on hot topics ranging from artificial intelligence to archaeology, computer hacking and medical discoveries, space travel to the the rise of the robots
  • Source leads from industry insiders to deliver exclusives and have instinct to uncover compelling, well-researched stories ahead of competition
  • Understand and use audience and traffic analytics tools
  • Continually look to grow readership and ways to raise brand awareness
  • Work closely with video department to produce bespoke multimedia assets
  • Attend industry events and conferences when necessary
  • Curate and maintain technology social media accounts
  • Work with IBT’s commercial team when required
Requirements
  • Creative editor who looks for alternative angles to every story, leaning on a well-stocked contacts book with industry PRs, analysts and experts for comment
  • Strong SEO skills and understanding of online journalism
  • Extensive knowledge of the consumer technology market and key emerging tech trends and experience covering the biggest companies, new startups and important industry figures from Silicon Valley and beyond
  • Good knowledge and familiarity with scientific research, from archaeology to astrophysics
  • Being confident reading and understanding peer-reviewed academic studies
  • Ability to spot an important scientific breakthrough, as well as opportunities to myth-bust bad science
  • Work with speed, keeps cool under pressure, quick to react to breaking stories  
  • Excellent grammatical and writing skills with a sharp eye for accuracy    
  • Strong communication and leadership skills to mentor and train reporters
  • Social media savvy, optimising content to appeal to users of all social platforms/channels

DESIRABLE:

  • Willingness to work weekends or flexible hours to cover major international launches
  • Can comfortably conduct media appearances
